Derek Adams and Swindon Town have opened talks over the Scotsman taking over as manager of the club, according to Alan Nixon.

The journalist wrote on his Patreon that the 48-year-old remains firmly in the frame to take over from Michael Flynn and has been in discussions with the club.

Nixon previously said that Swindon were considering Adams after he was spotted watching them play against AFC Wimbledon in April and clearly the situation is progressing, although Town are yet to give any update on their search for a new manager.

Swindon have gone over 100 days without a permanent manager, following the departure of Flynn back in January, with Gavin Gunning remaining in the role on an interim basis having been in charge of the final 18 games of the season, winning five.

Speaking following the final game of the season, the 2-2 draw against Morecambe, the 33-year-old revealed that he was due to have a discussion with owner Clem Morfuni about his future after the match.

The outcome of that conversation is yet to be revealed, although the Adver understands that Gunning also remains in contention to be in charge next season.

Morfuni and CEO Anthony Hall both wrote in their programme notes for the Morecambe game that the club would be reviewing their options for the next manager as they look to learn from the club’s lowest-ever league finish.

Morfuni said: “We know across a number of areas that we need to do better and we will always take the opportunity to learn from this campaign, ensuring that we have a team capable of challenging for promotion sooner rather than later.

“This is why we will be assessing the best management team to deliver the success we aspire for ahead of the new season in plenty of time, to allow us to plan and ensure we have the right mix of experience and youth to build a team capable of promotion, which remains our ambition.”

Gunning added that he also expected the club to learn the lessons from a disappointing season for the first team.

He said: “Yes, 100 per cent [we have learned from this season]. Clem [Morfuni] will 100 per cent back it, which he has done for the last couple of years.

“100 per cent [everyone is learning the lessons], if you are making the same mistakes that you were three or four months ago then you are not improving as a player or member of staff.”
